Sammy Anzer, Community Liason
Sammy Anzer’s personal journey from a class clown to a Senior Director of Professional Learning is a testament to the transformative power of education. His unique approach, using humor to entertain and educate, is not just a strategy but a part of his identity. Sammy’s journey resonates with many, as he understands that the way to a learner’s head is through their heart. Sammy made the transition from being a title-1 high school student to teaching poetry to title-1 high school students to teaching teachers how to reach their students. Now, as a full-time speaker and stand-up comedian, it’s clear that Sammy’s love of words and learning has blossomed.
Equipped with his Master’s in urban education, Sammy became endlessly fascinated with how his students and others learn best because, in his own life, education was the solution to inequity. His eventual departure from the classroom to become a Senior Director of Professional Learning was driven by his passion to make a broader impact. His role involved mentoring and coaching teachers, helping them hone their practice and, in turn, reach their students more effectively. He led exciting learning experiences for teachers across the globe, using research-based methods and Culturally Responsive Education practices. These practices, which he himself experienced as a disengaged learner in his New York City public school, helped him reach his minority student population, inspiring them to learn and grow. Now, he performs and speaks across the country and is a proud member of the Art from Ashes Board of Directors, where the power of poetry helps youth reclaim their narratives.
