DESCRIPTION:Running of the Gays: Hoofin’ it in Heels for LGBTQ+ Youth\nCome out and join Denver’s LGBTQIA community and Allies as we run toward a better future for youth at the 9th annual Running of the Gays!\nGet yer heels (and ankles!) ready to roll… or strut\, or hop\, or stumble in a 3-block “marathon” in heels to fund creative empowerment programs for queer youth in the Denver community. The event is organized by Art from Ashes\, Denver’s LGBTQIA* community and Allies. Each year runners are asked to raise money through sponsorships to trot 3 blocks down 17th Avenue in heels\, starting at Ace Eat Serve patio next to Steuben’s Food Service followed by an all ages (until 1.30 pm) after party at X Bar! \nProceeds contribute to continuing transformational creative programs for local youth who identify as LGBTQ+. While the event is silly\, the statistics for our LGBTQ+ young people are decidedly unfunny: gay and lesbian youth are two to three times more likely to commit suicide than other youths\, and 30% of all completed youth suicides are related to the issue of sexual identity; 45% of gay males and 20% of lesbians surveyed reported having experienced verbal harassment and/or physical violence during high school as a result of their sexual orientation; 26% of gays and lesbian youth are forced to leave home because of conflicts with their families over sexual identity. Art from Ashes provides creative programs with proven results that improve self-perception and increase involvement with and connection to the community. \nRun a 3-block marathon in heels to help fund creative empowerment workshops for the queer youth in our community! Art from Ashes has been blessed with a gala fundraiser thanks to Liz Kane of Centennial Peaks Hospital and Rourke Weaver of Red Rock Recovery Center.\nThe Recover Your Creative Genius gala fundraiser at the Grant Humphrey’s Mansion in Denver is all to honor AfA’s work in prevention and intervention of youth substance abuse! There will be wine and appetizers\, a lavish 3-course meal\, live music by AfA guest musicians Jon Shockness (kid astronaut) and Kayla Marque\, fun games\, and a brilliant keynote speech by Austin Eubanks\, Columbine survivor and champion of his own personal recovery from substance abuse. \nThis fundraiser is special for AfA since so many of the youth and staff we work with have been affected by addiction. Substance abuse prevention is a documented result of AfA’s creative youth empowerment programs. To show the support and appreciation of the recovery community\, Liz and Rourke have joined forces with Wesley Hooks of Sandstone Care to make this gala fundraiser a gift for our agency. \nThere are still 30 tickets available for individuals to purchase: $175 each or $250 for two. AfA is holding a Yard Sale fundraiser on Friday\, June 2 from 4 PM to 7 PM\, where we will sell your donated items to benefit our youth workshop programs. \nWe’re on the lookout for “pretty things\,” such as small pieces of furniture\, candles\, decorative objects\, and similar goods. DESCRIPTION:On First Friday on March 3rd at 6 pm\, Art from Ashes will hold a house lighting…like a housewarming\, just with more\, well light. \nWe want to keep our new home filled with love and light\, so we are asking that everyone bring something that generates\, photosynthesizes\, reflects or refracts light. What does that look like? Floor lamps (we need a few!)\, crystals\, plants\, faerie lights\, strings of lights\, Chinese lanterns\, or any other delightful gift that will bring more love and light to our new home. And of course\, the youth will perform. So you get light right back!\nAs always\, there will be amazing performances from youth in our community. Our young people have put their soul on a page to share it with you. Miss Angela Nicole will be the MC for the evening. \nWe are so excited for everyone to see our new home!
