Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture
Art from Ashes is the 2018 winner of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Arts & Culture: Youth Award
The award is presented to an organization that has significantly impacted the lives of youth in the City and County of Denver through the arts.

Thank you to the selection committee for the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts & Culture (including Erika Righter of Hope Tank), who honored Art from Ashes with the Youth Award!
Also honored were Dorothy Tanner (Innovation Award), Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center (Global Award), Colorado Ballet/Keya Clairmont (IMAGINE 2020 Award), and René Heredia Flamenco Fantasy Dance Theatre (Impact Award). Thank you to Mayor Hancock, and Denver Arts & Venues, particularly Tariana Navas-Nieves, Becky Grupe and Brooke Dilling who set up the whole event!
Thank you also to Indigenous artist Jonathan Nelson for the beautiful journals, desserts from woman-owned Sugar Bakeshop and Coffee House, awards from Access Gallery, and event photography from veteran photographers, TASK FORCE ISO.

TOP 50 IN THE COUNTRY!
In February, AfA applied for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, and once again we have been recognized as having one of the top 50 youth arts programs in the country. More info here: www.artfromashes.org/about/community-awards-and-honors.
The NAHYP is a program of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities™—in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services™—to showcase cultural excellence and enhance the availability of out-of-school arts and humanities programs to children and young people.
Since AfA has consistently been recognized by this prestigious organization, we received a letter from the National Endowment for the Humanities encouraging us to apply for their Challenge Grant. After several conversations with the federal agency and over 100 hours of work on behalf of several members of the grant team, we applied for a two-year federal grant in May.
2016 NAHYP National Recognition
Each year, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and its cultural partners — the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services — recognizes 50 outstanding programs all over the country for their work in providing excellent arts and humanities learning opportunities to young people. This is the third time AfA has been recognized as having one of the top 50 youth arts programs in the country: the Phoenix Rising youth empowerment program using poetry and spoken word.
The committee sent the following letter to Art from Ashes announcing our award:

AfA was named a Finalist for the prestigious President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. In the certificate from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Art from Ashes is noted as “one of the top arts and humanities-based programs in the country.” The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities “bridges the interests of federal agencies and the private sector, supports special projects that increase participation and excellence in the arts and humanities and helps incorporate these disciplines into White House objectives under our Honorary Chairperson First Lady Michelle Obama.”
