On December 13, 2024, Art from Ashes hosted a heartfelt and transformative writing workshop for AfA staff, board members, and volunteers, titled “Nourishing Resilience: A Writing Time for Those Who Give.” John Fox – poet, Practitioner of Poetic Medicine (PPM), and founder of Institute for Poetic Medicine, dedicated to healing through the creative and therapeutic process of hearing, speaking, and writing poetry – facilitated a rejuvenating workshop that gave everyone who attended the time and space to recharge.
The workshop was designed as a much-needed antidote to the end-of-year hustle and stress too commonly experienced by those working in nonprofit organizations. So much time and energy gets devoted to activities like fundraising, grant writing, and reporting, all while ensuring the organization’s mission remains at the forefront. Opportunities to pause and reflect are too often passed over when they are needed the most.
John led the session with empathy and insight, providing a safe environment for participants to delve into their experiences and emotions through poetry reading, writing, and sharing. Kelly Thomas, a member of the AfA Board, expressed her appreciation for the event, stating, “This gathering was incredibly meaningful. It provided us with an opportunity to slow down, truly listen, and learn more about each other. It was cathartic for many of us. I am deeply grateful to Jessica, our Executive Director, for organizing this event, and to John for helping us feel seen, heard, and cared for.”
A huge thank you to John Fox (and his gentle guidance) and to everyone who attended for their openness and participation! This event served as a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the importance of self-care. AfA is excited for future collaborations with this wonderful organization!
